Outstanding Achievement in Athletics

 

Scott Roth always had a knack for sports according to his parents. Early on he joined the Sun and Splash recreational swimming team in Camp Hill. In high school, he swam on the Mechanicsburg Pool Swim Team in the summer where he excelled in backstroke events. In the fall, he ran Cross Country and in winter he played Varsity Basketball. In spring he took part in Track and Field. Being six feet, two inches in height, his specialty was the high jump. At graduation, he was awarded the “Athletic Award.” For two summers, he was also a lifeguard.

Scott was accepted and offered a scholarship for Track and Field at nine colleges his senior year. However, his love of swimming took him to Penn State University where he was given a partial scholarship for swimming. Over the next four years, he won multiple awards in backstroke events. He often swam five miles a day and took part in a college teaching practicum at Balboa High School Panama Canal. While there he served as the assistant swim coach. Scott also played Water Polo at Penn State. His senior year he was voted captain of both the Penn State Swim Team and the Water Polo Team. Post college graduation he became involved with many events, some of which are listed below.

  • Earned a position on the First Boat Doubles Rowing Team, Avalon Beach Patrol New Jersey whereby he took part in tri state competitions.
  • Continued to serve as a lifeguard and on one occasion saved a child from drowning. He also tried to save a man who had a heart attack.
  • Upon moving to Florida, he was a Florida Youth Soccer Association coach for ten years.
  • Swam in a local triathlon fundraiser in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Scott was nominated by classmate Diane Prescott, Class of 1973. Today Scott lives in St. Petersburg, Florida. He has three children and seven grandchildren, all of whom he taught to swim.
