Thomas A. Fisher '62
Outstanding Achievement in Athletics
Whenever there was an opportunity for Thomas (Tom), whether it was in school, in an organized town team or just friends getting together for pick-me-up football or soccer games, that’s where Tom could be found. He took part in basketball, track and played baseball on community teams. Throughout high school he played baseball, soccer, football, wrestling and track. Unfortunately, in basketball, due to his lack of height, he often found himself sitting on the bench during most of the game until minimal time was left, then he entered the game.
This experience made him a good sport but more importantly, he learned a lot about coaching and how not to coach. In the fall of 1962 Tom attended West Virginia University. There he played soccer and in his senior year the team won the Southern Conference title. He graduated in 1969 with a B.S. in Physical Education.
He began his working career as a physical education teacher at Galina High School, Washington County. While there he coached basketball, baseball, and soccer. In 1970 Tom transferred to the Carroll County Public School system beginning at Francis Scott Key and then moving to Westminster West Middle School where he remained for thirty-two
years until his retirement. Highlights of his achievements as a teacher and coach included:
- Coached football, track and field at Westminster High School WHS as well as at Winter’s Mill
- Led the WHS Girls Track Team to twelve consecutive regional titles
- Officiated college wrestling
- Fifty-year career as a high school andcollege basketball official
- Coached, mentored, and taught generations of students and student athletes. He was a pillar of Carroll County athletics
Unfortunately, Tom passed away in November of 2022 after a brave battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; his three daughters; Meredith Cope Fisher, Rachel Fisher Kearns, and Jennifer Lyn Huseman, and the love of this life, his granddaughter Charley Simone Kerns who is making her TPop proud by playing competitive soccer in Denver, CO. Tom was nominated by Cindy Alleman, Class of 1962.
